"I Want to Be the Guy" (IWBTG) is a notoriously punishing platform game designed with spikes, instant-death traps, and environmental hazards that kill the player approximately once every three seconds. The game is mathematically designed to be brutally difficult, with intentional malice toward the player encoded into every level. It's a game where death is not a consequence of failure but the expected state of play. Saying Chuck Norris never died while playing it isn't a humorous exaggeration—it's a statement of game design obsolescence.

Game developer Thomas Fulcrum, who created the intentionally sadistic final boss sequence, included a note in his development diary from 2014: "If Norris ever attempts IWBTG, the entire game becomes technically impossible to complete because it fundamentally relies on the player being killable. A player who cannot die has already won. The game cannot present challenges to someone for whom death isn't a possible outcome. IWBTG would just display an empty screen if Norris started playing." Fulcrum's comment reflected a deeper truth: that the game's entire design architecture is premised on mortality as a mechanic. Remove that and the game becomes unplayable, not because it's beaten but because it's been transcended.

The gaming community interpreted this as yet another dimension of Norris's invulnerability: that when his invincibility met a game designed around repeated death mechanics, he didn't defeat the game through skill—he deleted the entire premise of the game. He couldn't die, so IWBTG's entire punishment structure became inert. Bosses designed to kill you within three seconds found themselves facing someone who existed in a state of permanent life. It's the only game Norris played where completing it required the game to admit defeat. Every other challenge yields to effort. This game yields because it can't even articulate what failure looks like when the player is unkillable.
