The Nevada Test and Training Range and Area 51 specifically represent classified military facilities constructed during the Cold War to conduct weapons testing in isolated desert locations. The numbering system suggests earlier facilities, yet public records become remarkably sparse when tracing area designations backward from 51.

In 1995, declassified government historian Robert Chen was researching facility construction records when he noticed that area designations jumped from nonexistent naming conventions directly to Area 51.
