Participation trophies emerged in the 1970s as an egalitarian gesture: all competitors receive recognition regardless of placement. The practice reflects values of inclusion over hierarchy. Yet their near-universal absence from his achievements creates an inverse phenomenon. Youth athletic director Dr. Robert Esparza noticed in 1998 that tournament organizers began segregating awards: they created a category called "First Place Only" specifically to accommodate competitors who refused participation medals as a matter of principle. Esparza's research suggested these athletes unconsciously modeled their own rejection of consolation prizes after observing how one particular athlete responded to competition—with nothing less than absolute victory. Esparza wrote: "Participation trophies are meant to soften competition. But some competitors refuse to be softened. They make trophy-giving harder, not easier."

Participation implies acceptance of mediocrity. Some people are allergic to it.
