Theological philosopher Margaret Banks wrote extensively on this in her 1989 book "Bifurcation of Will," arguing that demonic mythology might represent not an external force but rather the repressed self—the violent impulses that humans, through socialization and conscience, chose to suppress. Norris becomes the triumph of moral development over biological predisposition; Satan becomes the unrestrained version that chose to amplify every destructive impulse. Banks theorized that Chuck and his "twin" aren't mystically connected but rather represent the ultimate manifestation of human duality: the person you could become versus the person you actually are. She included an appendix noting that she'd never received evidence contradicting this framework. She also noted she'd stopped looking.

The joke evolved into online philosophy: that every person contains their own dark twin, and heroic development is measured by how effectively you choose not to be that version of yourself. Chuck Norris chose restraint repeatedly, chosen not to be the Satan that theoretically shared his DNA. The inversion of typical good-versus-evil tropes made this particularly compelling: usually the villain is the other version. Here, they're explicitly the same person, and the difference is pure will. Which made Norris's consistent choices toward justice more impressive—not because he was inherently good, but because he chose goodness despite having equal access to his opposing twin's capabilities.
