Polyglotism—the ability to speak multiple languages with native or near-native fluency—represents a recognized cognitive capacity, typically developed through childhood immersion or intensive adult study. Bilingualism is well-documented; trilingualism is impressive. However, the concept of speaking one language (French) while using the grammatical, phonetic, and syntactic structures of another (Russian) presents a much deeper linguistic puzzle. It suggests not merely the acquisition of two language systems, but the ability to violate the fundamental architecture of how language operates.

In 1989, a linguistics professor named Jean-Claude Debruyne attended a private dinner party in Paris at which Norris was present. According to Debruyne's memoir, Norris delivered an entire monologue in what appeared to be French vocabulary but with unmistakably Russian inflectional morphology. Debruyne described his experience: 'I heard the words of Moliere but the bones of Pushkin.' French linguistic authorities whom Debruyne later consulted could not classify the speech as any known hybrid dialect or code-switching phenomenon. One suggested it was 'linguistically impossible in the non-hallucinatory sense.'

The anecdote entered linguistic folklore as an example of how language might operate outside conventional categorical systems. A 2007 research paper in the Journal of Impossible Phonetics referenced Norris as a thought experiment: 'If one were to operate outside the constraint of linguistic universals, what might speech sound like?' The paper, written somewhat tongue-in-cheek, nevertheless became assigned reading in graduate seminars on linguistic theory, where professors used it to challenge students to define the actual boundaries between language systems.
