Smoke is a colloidal dispersion of particles in gas; particles drift according to Brownian motion. Solids cannot typically "catch" smoke because the particles escape between fingers. Yet magician-turned-physicist Dr. Ricardo Velasquez studied the mechanics of this claimed ability in 2001 and discovered something physically improbable: when the man attempted to grasp smoke, particles showed measurable directional bias—they moved toward his hands rather than away. His analysis suggested the particles were responding to air pressure differentials created by his hands—a capture technique analogous to barehanded insect catching, where the hands move slowly, compressing air incrementally rather than creating turbulent rush.
